Hi everyone! Today I’m sharing one of my few sewing wins. I finished this around September last year. I’ve worn it a couple of times already, without anybody noticing it was handmade. Whew! And, I’ve always forgotten to take photos. Last time I wore it to work and found myself in a well-lit empty bathroom with a big mirror, and so here we are.
Misses’ chic and stylish jumpsuits and dresses feature dress in maxi and mini lengths and short romper or jumpsuit. All views have a crossover bodice and optional sash.
6-18. I cut a size 6. It’s a little too loose!
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes. I did View D and didn’t make the ties.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
I was a little bit confused on how to attach the straps to the top. But it was because I didn’t read through all the instructions before sewing the top. I did make a wearable toile (using quilter’s cotton, it’s heavy) and that’s where all the mistakes happened.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I love the deep v-neck, the wide leg, and the big pockets. Pockets make everything better. The elasticated waist makes it so much easier to use outside. Imagine having to pee, and having to unzip yourself every time.
Black polyester crepe. This fabric is so soft and drapey, but it frayed a lot while cutting. I finished all the raw edges before sewing the seams. This part took forever. I might need a serger for this.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made
I shortened the pants by around 6 inches. I also didn’t make the tie belt.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
YES! I can see myself making the maxi dress version using a bright floral print fabric.
New Look 6493 is a beginner-friendly pattern and great wardrobe builder piece. It’s a little bit oversized so I can wear it with or without a top underneath. Because of the fabric I used, I’ve even worn this to work multiple times already. Next time, I’ll probably sew up the neckline a bit, because it opens up a bit.
